An
injury-time equaliser from Matt Sim has given a 10-man Central Coast a deserved
point in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle at Hunter Stadium.
Sim
scored with a low shot in the 91st minute after the Jets failed to properly
clear a long free kick into the box.
Newcastle
had gone ahead in the 83rd minute when Serbian striker Milos Trifunovic struck
a glancing header in off the far post from a David Carney corner kick.
The
equaliser from Sim, who came on the 80th minute for Mitch Austin, capped a
brave effort from the Mariners, who are unbeaten in F3 derbies against their
A-League rivals since October 2012.
The
Mariners lost centre-back Jake McGing to a straight red card in the 24th minute
for a lunging challenge on Leonardo which led to the Brazilian being stretchered
from the field with a lower leg injury and taking no further part in the game.
Despite
the numerical disadvantage, the Mariners regularly caused turnovers and created
chances.
Before
the send-off, Central Coast were unlucky not to gain a penalty when Mateo
Poljak brought down Austin in the 21st minute.
Referee
Kris Griffiths-Jones called a free kick on the edge of the box despite replays
showing contact was made just inside the penalty area.
The
draw lifts Newcastle to 10 points from six games, while the Mariners go to five
points.
