Corey Gameiro has suffered an agonising second ACL injury in as many years, ending
his A-League season.
The
Melbourne City winger took a knock to his left knee during his side's record
5-1 win over Perth Glory on Friday night.
He was able
to limp from the field, raising hopes the 22-year-old would avoid the same
injury he suffered while at Sydney FC last year.
Unfortunately
for Gameiro, scans on Saturday morning confirmed a rupture.
He requires
surgery that will rule him out until the 2015-16 season.
Gameiro
posted the news on Twitter, saying he was "devastated and torn to
bits".
"Football
can be cruel sometimes," he said.
"I had
a horrible year last year and worked so hard physically and mentally to get
back on the pitch, only to have it taken away from me so quickly.
"I know
I'll be back better and stronger again, I've done it once and I will do it
again."
Gameiro's
injury came in just his second start back from an 11-month lay-off and is a
huge blow to City's A-League aspirations.
John van 't
Schip will not be able to field his best attacking line-up - of Bruno
Fornaroli, Harry Novillo and Gameiro - again this season.
The Dutchman
said he was deeply saddened by the injury.
"Corey
is no doubt devastated with the news and our thoughts are with him during this
difficult period," he said.
Gameiro was
flooded with well-wishers after tweeting the news.
Support came
across the football community, including current and past team-mates.
"We are
all with you bro. You are one of the strongest guys I know and you'll be back
soon," Erik Paartalu tweeted.
