Cameron
McEvoy has cracked Ian Thorpe's 15-year national record in the 200m freestyle
final at the Australian Short Course Championships on Friday night.
On
a night where Mitch Larkin stole the spotlight with a world record swim, McEvoy
raced down the Australian legend with a remarkable 1:40.80 in Sydney that also
equalled the Commonwealth time.
"To
give Ian credit, he didn't do too many short course competitions," McEvoy
said.
"And
I'm pretty sure he did that record when he was still a teenager. He most likely
would've went quicker than that in the latter parts of his career.
"But
I'm still going to take that."
It
was the second night in a row McEvoy outdid his 21-year-old self, having also
set a personal best 46.31 seconds in the 100m final the previous night.
Along
with injured James Magnussen, the Gold Coast product will be one of Australia's
great hopes at next year's Olympics in Rio, however he insisted he needed to
build on his current golden run.
Asked
what his string of strong results meant for next year, McEvoy said: "If I
don't keep the ball rolling, it'd be pointless.
"It
just makes it easier to keep the momentum going. It's just getting back into
training, testing where I can improve, and assessing the things where I want to
aim."
McEvoy
has one final event to contest on the final day in Sydney, where he will face
off against Matthew Abood and Te Haumi Maxwell in the 50m freestyle.
