Sergio Aguero equalled a Barclays Premier League record by scoring five times as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 6-1 victory over Newcastle United.
After losing their previous two league outings there were fears City would suffer a repeat dose at the Etihad Stadium when Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring with his first Newcastle goal.
But Aguero headed the home side level three minutes from the end of a keenly contested first half.
Within five minutes of the restart Aguero had claimed the matchball, scoring from passes by David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne respectively.
After De Bruyne had volleyed a wonderful fourth, Aguero had time to add two more before departing to a standing ovation in the 66th minute.
He became the fifth player in the competition’s history to score five in a match after Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov.
The result moves City back to the top of the table ahead of Manchester United's trip to Arsenal on Sunday, while Steve McClaren's winless Newcastle fell to the bottom on goal difference.
eremain Lens scored and was sent off as Sunderland squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with West Ham United at the Stadium of Light.
A supportive home crowd hoped that they would see their side’s first win of the season after Sunderland put in a brilliant first-half performance to go 2-0 up inside 22 minutes, through goals from Steven Fletcher and Lens.
Carl Jenkinson pulled one back for West Ham just before half-time, and the afternoon turned sour for Sunderland in the second half as Lens was dismissed and Dimitri Payet levelled the scores on the hour.
The result extends West Ham's unbeaten run to five Barclays Premier League matches, while the consolation for Sunderland was that the point lifted them off the foot of the table and above local rivals Newcastle United.
Leicester City returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph away to Norwich City.
Jamie Vardy's penalty opened the scoring at Carrow Road for a Leicester team who made three changes from the defeat by Arsenal the previous weekend, with Riyad Mahrez left on the bench.
Claudio Ranieri's side coped well without the Algeria midfielder as Jeffrey Schlupp fired home a second just after the break to put the visitors in control.
Dieumerci Mbokani halved the deficit with his first goal for Norwich, when he turned in Jonny Howson's cross before Leonardo Ulloa's header was ruled out for a foul on John Ruddy.
Norwich poured forward in search of an equaliser but Leicester held firm to secure their fourth win of the campaign, while Alex Neil's side remain on nine points.
An error from Artur Boruc and a missed penalty from Glenn Murray cost AFC Bournemouth as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Watford.
Murray's first-half header on his full debut had the hosts set to go into the break in front after having the better of the first 45 minutes. But Boruc gifted an equaliser to Odion Ighalo with a poor pass just before half-time.
After struggling, Watford were better after the break and could have gone on to win, with Ben Watson smashing an effort off the crossbar. The Cherries could also claim the same with Murray’s spot-kick being saved by Heurelho Gomes with just seven minutes remaining.
The draw means AFC Bournemouth move to eight points from as many matches, while Watford have 10 having lost only two of their first eight matches in the top flight.
Marko Arnautovic scored the only goal as Stoke City continued their upward momentum in the Barclays Premier League with a 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
After a disappointing start, Stoke claimed their third straight win in all competitions and second in the league, thanks to Arnautovic's 55th-minute strike.
The Austria forward had seen a 35th-minute attempt disallowed for offside but would not be denied a second time, his low shot from 10 yards condemning Villa to a fourth-straight league defeat.
Micah Richards missed a glorious chance to level but Villa, who have not won in the Barclays Premier League since the opening day of the season, rarely tested Stoke after that.
Defeat for Villa keeps Sherwood's men in the bottom three with four points from eight matches and next have a trip to Chelsea after the international break.
Earlier on Saturday, Crystal Palace made five wins from their opening eight BPL matches with a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Selhurst Park. The triumph was sealed with second-half goals from Yannick Bolasie and Yohan Cabaye.
