Australian's track cycling athlete Anna Meares was last night named Women’s Health magazine’s sports woman of the year at a presentation in Sydney.
Meares was unable to attend to accept the award as she is currently in Colombia preparing for a UCI track world cup but was recognised for her contribution to women’s sport.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist became the greatest female track cyclist in history this year when she won her 11th world title to surpass Frenchwoman Felicia Ballanger’s record.
While Meares took out the top gong, other awards went to Diamonds netball captain Laura Geitz and cricket and soccer star Ellyse Perry, while retired swimmer Susie O’Neill was inducted into the hall of fame.
Winners were chosen by more than 160,000 public votes as well as by a judging panel consisting of Sally Pearson — the 2014 Women’s Health sports woman of the year — Katie Page, Kitty Chiller, Mark Beretta and magazine management Felicity Harley and Jackie Frank.
