FEYENOORD SUFFER 3-1 DEFEAT AGAINST OLYMPIACOS IN FINAL PRESEASON TEST

Dirk Kuyt scored his first goal since re-joining Feyenoord on Saturday night. The striker earned and converted a penalty on the hour mark in the friendly against Olympiacos. The goal turned out to be just a consolation though, as the Greeks claimed a 3-1 win in the final preseason game before next week’s Eredivisie opener against FC Utrecht. Feyenoord were without Simon Gustafson, Miquel Nelom and Jean-Paul Boëtius through illness.
The game was half an hour old before Feyenoord got going against the Greek double winners. The visitors put the Rotterdammers under intense pressure from the start and it took thirty minutes before the hosts strung enough passes together to pose any kind of threat.
By then Olympiacos were already two goals ahead. Both came from textbook counterattacking moves from the Greeks. The game was just six minutes old when Jens Toornstra gave the ball away in a dangerous area. Kenneth Vermeer suddenly found himself outnumbered two to one. The keeper parried the first effort, but Franco Jara snapped up the rebound. Twenty minutes later a lightning-fast break over virtually the length of the field was finished off by Felipe Pardo to put Olympiacos in a commanding position.

Feyenoord should really have at least pulled a goal back themselves not long after. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side created two huge chances, with Bilal Basaçikoglu taking on the role of provider in both. The game was past the half-hour mark when Dirk Kuyt headed over a Basaçikoglu cross. A little later the winger fed Elvis Manu, who should have scored. Feyenoord paid for their profligacy at the end of the first half, when Konstantinos Fortounis finished off another fast break to send the Greeks in three ahead

Feyenoord came out fighting after the break, though, giving the home fans something to cheer about. The hosts started to find each other more easily and fashioned a number of good opportunities. Kuyt’s spot kick strike on the hour was the least Feyenoord deserved. The striker earned the penalty himself, then stroked home to mark his return to De Kuip in the best possible way.
Despite being unable to dent the visitors lead further, the hosts played with passion and were given an ovation by the home fans at the end of the game. All told, Feyenoord will take heart from their second half performance against the automatic Champions League qualifiers ahead of the first league game of the season next Saturday night at De Kuip against FC Utrecht.
