The Matildas enjoyed tremendous success at the World Cup,
knocking out Brazil in the round of 16, but the quarter-final appearance has
done little for their world ranking.
Despite beating Nigeria and Brazil, and playing out a 1-1
draw with Sweden, the Matildas gained just one spot in the FIFA world rankings,
moving up to ninth, switching positions with Norway.
As a result of their World Cup win the United States
reclaimed the top spot, relegating Germany to second.
The USA beat Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals in Montreal
which guaranteed them top spot, with Silvia Neid's team dropping to second.
France, who were beaten on penalties by the Germans in the
quarter-finals, hold on to third place, just ahead of the Japanese despite the
latter making the final.
England, who finished third in the tournament after beating
two-time world champions Germany in the third-place play-off, have been
rewarded with their highest-ever ranking of fifth.
Sweden suffered the biggest drop, losing two spots after
failing to escape their group at the World Cup and are now seventh.
The biggest movers are Cameroon, the African side move up 10
places to 43rd position after their run to the last 16 where they were defeated
by China.
Women's FIFA world rankings:
1. United States 2189 pts (+1)
