Tottenham set new club record following 4-1 win over Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur‘s victory over Southampton tonight means that the North London club have gained 71 Premier League points in 2016 – a new club record over a calendar year.
Despite falling behind to a goal from Virgil Van Dijk, Tottenham prevailed with a 4-1 win away to Southampton, with Dele Alli hitting a brace, while Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were also on the scoresheet.
Tottenham’s previous record points tally for a calendar year in the Premier League was 70, which they set in 2013.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team have produced some excellent performances this year and it appeared for much of last season that they had a good chance to win the Premier League title only for them to fall away in the closing stages, enabling Leicester City to pounce.
This campaign Tottenham are aiming to challenge for the title again and, at the very least, will be determined to secure a top four finish. Competition for places at the top of the table is set to be fierce, however, meaning that Pochettino’s side can ill afford to have many slip ups if they are to enjoy a successful campaign.
