Australian coach Mark Rudan is the favourite to replace Ernie Merrick as Wellington Phoenix coach, Australian media are reporting.
Fox Sports are speculating former Sydney FC captain and ex-Sydney United boss Rudan, 41 is the Phoenix's top choice candidate to replace Merrick. He is set to meet the club on Monday about the possibility.
Merrick stepped down on Monday and is understood to have addressed his players after Sunday's 2-0 loss to Adelaide, telling them he had taken them as far as he could.
Phoenix assistant Chris Greenacre and Des Buckingham will take over as joint interim head coaches, while the club undergoes a thorough process to fill the role full time.
