WESTERN Sydney’s loss is Perth’s gain, with former Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic has been unveiled as the Glory’s new shot-stopper.
Covic, who turned 40 last month, was one of 10 players released by the Wanderers at the end of last season, despite leading the club to Asian Champions League glory.
It came as a shock at the time, especially as Covic was named the ACL’s player of the tournament, and he left the Wanderers determined to prove age remains no barrier for him.
The veteran keeper will replace Danny Vukovic, who left the Glory to take up the gloves at Melbourne Victory.
Perth has been forced to rebuild their squad following the salary cap saga that saw them kicked out of last season’s A-League finals series and fined $269,000. Several players chose to exit the club as a result, but the new recruits are beginning to arrive.
Former Sydney FC youngster Hagi Gligor recently joined Perth, while Covic will be reunited with his former Wanderers teammates Antony Golec and Jerrad Tyson.
Tyson spent two seasons playing second fiddle to Covic at the Wanderers, before picking up a season-long stint with Hong Kong Premier League side Sun Pegasus. He could find himself playing the understudy yet again with Perth coach Kenny Lowe expected to favour Covic as his first-choice keepe
