Guy Clark, Grammy-winning musician, died in Nashville on Tuesday. He was 74.
The singer-songwriter’s official Facebook page announced the news.
Clark is reported to have been in poor health in recent years, forcing him to stop recording and touring shortly after his wife’s death in 2012.
The musician was born in Monahans, Texas, in 1941 and after several years spent working odd jobs and moving around the country while playing music on the weekends, he settled in Nashville and wrote a string of songs that became his first hit record, “Old No. 1,” with RCA in 1975.
The album’s songs included “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” “L.A. Freeway” and “That Old Time Feeling.”
His highest charting songs were “Fools for Each Other” (No. 96 on the Billboard Country 100), “Homegrown Tomatoes” (No. 42) and “The Partner Nobody Chose” (No. 38).
As a songwriter, he composed songs performed by Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Bobby Bare and Vince Gill.
In 2004, Clark was inducted into the Nashville Hall of Fame, and went on to win the 2014 Grammy for Best Folk Album for “My Favorite Picture Of You.”
Guy Clark is survived by son Travis and sisters Caroline Clark Dugan and Jan Clark, as well as a large extended family.
