The former Brazil captain will become technical director of the Greek side after arriving in Athens on Saturday, following several weeks of discussions with the club
The 39-year-old Brazilian has been in discussions with his former team for several weeks after club president Giannis Alafouzos identified him as the man to help the club regain its prestige in Europe.
After leaving Arsenal in 2008 'the Invisible Wall' played for Panathinaikos, Gremio and Atletico Minierio before retiring in 2013, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger reportedly keen on bringing him on board as a coach.
However, Gilberto himself has admitted that he isn't ready for a coaching position at the moment and will take up a challenging role with Panathinaikos after arriving in Athens on Saturday morning.
