Nick Kyrgios has scrapped his way into the second round at the French
Open, beating Italian Marco Cecchinato in three strait sets.
Looking
short of his absolute best form, Kyrgios needed two tiebreaks to take
a 2-0 lead, before finally securing a crucial break in the third to
seal the 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 win.
Kyrgios's
serve was a ferocious as ever, but armed with a graceful backhand,
Cecchinato refused to relent saving a number of break points
throughout the match.
But
when the Italian missed the chance to steal the second set tiebreak,
Kyrgios pounced to set up the match.
The
tie was not short of the usual Kyrgios controversy through, with the
young Aussie earning a code violation for an apparently overly
boisterous request for a towel from a ball boy.
The
volatile 21-year-old took exception to Ramos' ruling, arguing that he
had raised his voice to get the ball boy's attention purely because
of the raucous atmosphere inside 'the bullring' as showcourt one is
commonly known.
"Now
I've really seen it all," a mystified Kyrgios said to Ramos
after being handed the code violation.
"What
rules am I breaking?"
"That's
f***ing bullshit," Kyrgios barked, before referencing an
incident in Rome last week where world number one Novak Djokovic
pushed away the arm of chair umpire Carlos Bernardes during a win
over Rafael Nadal.
"How
can you sit there and give me a code for that?
"But
when Djokovic pushes an umpire out of the way that's alright? Tell
the whole world that's alright."
As he
took his place back on the court, Kyrgios directed his gaze at Ramos
and said: "Unbelievable bias man. Unbelievable bias."
