Paraguay sent Brazil crashing out of the Copa America on
Saturday as the five-time world champions' penalty shootout jinx struck again.
Striker Derlis Gonzalez was the hero for Paraguay, slotting
a second-half penalty to level the match at 1-1 before stepping up to rifle
home the decisive spot-kick to clinch a 4-3 win in the shootout.
Midfielder Everton Ribeiro and striker Douglas Costa missed
penalties for Brazil, and the 21-year-old Gonzalez's winner set up a last-four
showdown on Tuesday with Argentina. Chile will face Peru on Monday in the other
semi-final.
It is the second consecutive time Paraguay have eliminated
Brazil on penalties in the quarter-finals of the South American tournament.
Brazil went ahead with a goal by veteran striker Robinho in
the 15th minute, but Paraguay equalised with the Gonzalez penalty after
defender Thiago Silva clearly handled the ball inside the area.
