Brazil earned their quarter-final spot at the Under-20 World
Cup the hard way, edging Uruguay 5-4 in a penalty shootout at Stadium Taranaki
in New Plymouth on Thursday.
Although Brazil dominated possession, peppering Uruguay with
35 shots on goal while allowing only eight on their own, the scores were level
at 0-0 after extra time.
There was only one miss in the resulting penalty shootout,
Uruguay's Rodrigo Amaral skying the ball high over goal to see Brazil through
to a quarter-final clash with Portugal on Sunday.
Germany, who had scored 16 goals in their three pool
matches, managed just one in downing Nigeria 1-0 in Christchurch on Thursday.
Nigeria fashioned most of their chances from quick
counterstrikes, while the Germans proved more patient in building their attack.
Their sole goal came after Marc Stendera won possession just
outside the West Africans' box, offloading for Levin Oztunali to slam a
powerful left-footed shot home.
In the early game, Uzbekistan booked their spot in the
quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Austria in Whangarei.
After a scoreless first half, Dostonbek Khamdamov struck
twice within 10 minutes to secure the upset win.
Uzbekistan now travel to Wellington for their quarter-final
against an in-form Senegal, who secured their spot with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out
win over Ukraine in Auckland on Wednesday.
In the other quarter-finals, the US meet Serbia in Auckland,
Mali play Germany in Christchurch, and Portugal meet Brazil in Hamilton after
downing New Zealand 2-1 at Waikato Stadium
