In a tight tussle at AAMI Park, Berisha struck with 10 minutes left to snap Victory’s three-game winless run and thrust his name into A-League folklore with his special ton.
Berisha’s goal lit up a tense contest which looked like it would end goalless for long periods.
In an even first half, Roy O’Donovan had the best chance for the Mariners but shot straight at Lawrence Thomas, while James Troisi forced a stunning full-stretch save from Paul Izzo down the other end.
Victory dominated after the break and created a stack of chances before Berisha made the difference with 10 minutes left.
While the Mariners will need to wait another day to see if they avoid the wooden spoon, Victory will head into the semi-final in a fortnight in a confident mood.
GOAL
1-0 Melbourne Victory: Besart Berisha 80’
James Troisi surged down the left and crossed with Berisha missing the ball, only for it to make its way to Jai Ingham. The Kiwi winger unselfishly played it back to Berisha who blasted it home from close range.
