The first round action at Indian Wells delivered some interesting matches in women's section, and we saw Naomi Osaka, Julia Goerges, Lauren Davis, Donna Vekic, Lucie Safarova, Jelena Jankovic, Shelby Rogers and Andrea Petkovic all reach the second round. Naomi Osaka needed 70 minutes to beat fellow Japanese Risa Ozaki 6-4 6-2, losing her serve only once and breaking her rival on 4 occasions. Osaka was especially good in set number 2 when she sailed through her service games and broke Ozaki in games 3 and 7 to book her place in the second round. Polish qualifier Magda Linette defeated Taylor Townsend by an identical 6-4 6-2 score in a very similar match, dropping her serve once and scoring 4 breaks on the other side. The first set was close, decided by one extra break on Linette's side, and she grabbed 20 out of the final 26 points to clinch the last 5 games and move to the next round safely. Julia Goerges needed an hour and a half to hold off Ajla Tomljanovic by 7-5 6-2, who is trying to make her comeback after an injury. German kept her second serve safe, being broken only once, and she played her best tennis when she needed it most, taking the final 3 games of the opener for a 7-5. She then broke Ajla at love at the start of the second set, and again in game 7 to cement her win.
