Hackett has been taken into custody and is in Southport watch-house.
His father Nev said his son had been arrested over ‘mental health issues’ but declined to comment further.
The former Olympic gold medallist was filmed being driven to the Southport police watchhouse in handcuffs.
Police are believed to have been called to Hackett’s family home at Mermaid Waters just before noon following reports of a disturbance.
Officers are believed to have found him asleep when they arrived.
The 36-year-old, who represented Australia at three Olympic Games was born on the Gold Coast and attempted a comeback before the 2016 Rio Games.
In recent years he has struggled in his personal life, including a well-publicised incident in April last year when he allegedly grabbed the nipple of a fellow plane passenger.
