Greek footballers appeared in a friendly game recently to raise money for 20-year-old footballer Leonidas Koutsoukis who is receiving treatment for leukemia.
From his hospital bed, Koutsoukis (pictured left) recorded an emotional video message which was played to the crowd before the match in Zakynthos. He thanked the players and spectators for turning out for the game.
The match was organized by the Greek player union PSAP, which fielded a team including 2004 European champion national team: Stelios Giannakopoulos, Giorgos Karagounis, Kostas Katsouranis, Angelos Basinas and Kostas Chalkias. (Below: picture by Giorgos Filippidis.)
The PSAP’s invited team won 5-2 against Zakynthos, the second-division club which Koutsouskis joined in 2014.
Earlier, the Greek union’s social initiatives were presented at Zakynthos town hall, including a Skype video call with international player Vangelis Moras who talked about the PSAP campaign to promote bone marrow donation.
PSAP representatives have also been visiting primary and secondary schools in Zakynthos to educate them about violence, racism, doping and health as well as the principles of sportsmanship. They distributed free sports equipment as well as wristbands with slogans against violence and racism.
Since January 2015 PSAP has visited 50 schools, addressing 45,000 students.
