Arsenal Gunners will donate £1 for every
ticket sold during their match with Stoke City this weekend – to help the
refugee crisis.
The football world has been quick to
offer support to people seeking refuge from war-torn areas in the Middle East
and Africa, and Uefa are hopeful of raising around £2m after the first round of
Champions League fixtures next week.
All 80 teams involved in this
season’s competition have agreed to give £1 for every ticket sold on Matchday
One to help the crisis, but Arsenal are the first Premier League club to help
by giving ticket money from this weekend’s match.
The news was confirmed by Arsene
Wenger in his weekly press conference.
‘For the game against Stoke, for
every ticket sold, £1 will be donated to victims of the Syrian crisis,’ he told
the media.
The Frenchman then told the club’s
official website: ‘It’s an exceptional circumstance and I’m very happy that our
club contributes to help refugees to settle in countries where they come
without anything.
‘We’ll give £1 for every ticket sold
[against Stoke] and if everyone can contribute like we do then I think we can
give very, very strong help.’
Football authorities offered their
help for fleeing migrants after the body of Alan Kurdi, a three-year-old
Kurdish refugee, washed up on a Turkish shore last week.
Bayern Munich were one of the first
to offer a helping hand and the Bundesliga giants have donated around £720,000
to refugee causes.
