The Socceroos 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying path will be unveiled tonight following the draw for the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) second round of qualifying in Kuala Lumpur.
The Socceroos will be drawn from Pot 1 with its victory in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup ensuring a place as one of the top eight seeds, derived from last week’s release of the latest FIFA World Rankings.
The second round of the FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers commence in June 2015 with the Socceroos to play eight matches during the official FIFA Match dates in June 2015, September 2015, October 2015, November 2015 and March 2016.
The five pots for tonight’s draw are based on the FIFA rankings released last week and are as follows:
Pot 1: Iran, Japan, Korea Republic, Australia, UAE, Uzbekistan, China, Iraq
Pot 2: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Vietnam, Syria and Kuwait
Pot 3: Afghanistan, Philippines, Palestine, Maldives, Thailand, Tajikistan, Lebanon and India
Pot 4: Timor-Leste, Kyrgyzstan, DPR Korea, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Singapore and Bhutan
Pot 5: Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Yemen, Guam, Laos, Cambodia and Chinese Taipei
One team will be drawn from each Pot to form eight groups of five nations with the winner of each group and the four best runners up progressing to the next stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying process and also ensuring entry into the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
Socceroo Head Coach Ange Postecoglou will be in Kuala Lumpur tonight for the draw.
The AFC website http://www.the-afc.com/ will carry a live stream of the draw, which starts at 7pm (AEST) on Tuesday night (14 April 2015).
