The driver accused of killing three people in a crazed vehicular rampage through Melbourne's CBD has a history of family violence and had been involved in several incidents in recent days, police say.
The 26-year-old, who is currently in police custody, is alleged to have killed a young child and a man and woman in their 30s, as well as leaving 15 others injured.
Children are among those injured when he drove a Commodore through Bourke Street mall this afternoon. One of the children was rushed to hospital in a police car, with injuries so critical there was no time to wait for an ambulance.
The suspect is currently being investigated by the homicide squad with charges expected to follow, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay announced this evening.
The commissioner said of the 15 injured in the incident five have been left in critical conditions. Nine.com.au understands several children are among those injured.
The commissioner said police were forced to abandon the pursuit of the man, who was spotted doing burnouts at several locations in Melbourne today, including outside Flinders St station just before he allegedly began running down pedestrians.
In the early hours of this morning he is alleged to have left a man aged in his 20s – believed to be his own brother – in a critical condition after stabbing him in an incident at Windsor, in the southern metro region. He also interrupted a live cross on Channel Nine's TODAY program this morning.
The suspect was shot in the arm during his arrest.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews described the suspect's as "an evil crime", but praised the "instinctive support" those on the scene gave each other.
"I'm just so proud of all of those Victorians who reached out and provided support and care to strangers. That speaks volumes to the sort of community that we are."
