Arsenal beat West Brom 2-0 on Thursday night to climb above Manchester City into third place. Although Gunners fans will still be mourning their latest failed title challenge, this remains an important victory: had they failed to win, serious questions would have been asked about their ability to finish in the top four.
Arsene Wenger had Alexis Sanchez to thank for delivering the desired result. The Chilean is back in the goalscoring groove and demonstrated it with two excellent strikes to beat Ben Foster. First, he spun away from Sandro on the edge of the box before firing into the bottom corner. His second goal saw him thump a free-kick through a poor wall and beyond the stranded goalkeeper.
Wenger's men now travel to relegation-battling Sunderland for what is likely to be a much sterner test.
