Mumbai station stampede kills at least 22 'amid rumour bridge was collapsing'

A rush-hour stampede at a railway station in Mumbai has killed at least 22 people and injured dozens more.
Indian police said it was triggered by a rumour that a pedestrian bridge was collapsing, sparking chaos as passengers surged forwards to flee.
A railway spokesman said the stampede happened on the footbridge that had been particularly busy as passengers, who had been taking shelter from heavy rain, tried to leave the station at the same time.
The incident at Elphinstone station, which connects two of the west-coast city's major local lines, came amid overcrowding and heavy rain.
City police officer Rajaram Patel said at least 22 people were killed and another 20 injured when panicked pedestrians pushed forwards to the end of the overcrowded bridge, with some people falling underfoot and being trampled.
Police had said the stampede came amid a rumor that the bridge was collapsing after some chunks of concrete had fallen.
Politician Shaina Nana Chudasama, of the governing Bhartiya Janata party, said people had been huddling under the canopy covering the bridge to escape heavy rains, making the deadly tragedy worse.
Tanaji Pawar, a spokesman for Mumbai's disaster management unit, warned that the death toll "is likely to go up".

10-man Apollon Limassol hold Everton at Goodison Park

Everton's poor start in the Europa League continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park by Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol, who finished the game with 10 men.
A fortnight on from the woeful 3-0 away defeat to Atalanta in their Group E opener, Everton fell behind in the 13th minute when Adrian Sardinero netted following a mistake by Ashley Williams.
Eight minutes later they capitalised on an error from Apollon's Hector Yuste, with Wayne Rooney stroking in his first European goal for Everton, and substitute Nikola Vlasic then opened his Toffees account by slotting home in the 66th minute.
That looked set to be the winner, but a chaotic finish to the contest saw the away side have Valentin Roberge sent off, then equalise moments later through Yuste's header, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin blew a superb opportunity to secure victory for the hosts at the death.
Koeman told BT Sport: "To concede in the final minutes is really disappointing.
"We started poorly without any confidence, doing a lot of mistakes in our possession. We had a good reaction, we had a big present to get to 1-1. The second half was much better and controlled the game and had big chances to score a third.
"Its football, sometimes when you are struggling that's the reason we are too afraid to play football. Then it's difficult if your body is not full of confidence. It's several players.
"The challenge is to get the team full of confidence. But we need to start better than we did today because if we start like that with many mistakes - the first goal is shocking - then you don't get it back.
"If we win the game then we would have more confidence for the weekend. It feels like a defeat, not even a draw."
Rooney also reckoned the draw felt more like a loss.
"Of course, it's hard to take, we deserved to win the game, we had the better chances, we were the better team," he said.
"Obviously we conceded some sloppy goals. It's a point, we have to move on but it should be three.
"They are a good team, we know the strengths they have got, there are no easy games in Europe.
"We just need that goal to see the game off.
"We are still finding our feet, we have had a very difficult start to the season in terms of fixtures.
"That's two wins and a draw from the last three games, we have to try and keep progressing and try and keep picking up points."

Hugh Hefner dead: Celebrities pay tribute to Playboy founder after his death aged 91

Hugh Hefner, the iconic founder of Playboy magazine, has died aged 91, Playboy Enterprises has said.
Playboy Magazine was founded by Hefner more than 60 years ago as an upscale men's magazine, combining images of nude women with in-depth articles, literature and interviews.
“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognisable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones,” Playboy confirmed in a statement. “He was 91 years old.”
Hefner, often referred to as “Hef,” passed away at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.
Hugh Marston Hefner was born on 9 April , 1926, to strict Methodist parents. The eldest of two brothers, he served two years in the Army during World War II before finding a job at Esquire as a copywriter.
By 1953 he had saved $8,000 - enough to put the first issue of Playboy together. It hit newsstands in December that year and included an old nude photo of Marilyn Monroe, which Hefner had purchased to add some "oomph" to the centrefold.. The issue sold more than 50,000 copies.
The nude images of women would be placed alongside in-depth interviews with high profile actors, artists and politicians.
Martin Luther King Jr. sat down with the magazine in 1965; Hunter S. Thompson published his famous piece "The Great Shark Hunt" in 1974's, and writers such as Jack Kerouac, Vladimir Nabokov and Margaret Atwood saw some of their short fiction featured in its pages.
Hefner made several cameos in film and TV, including Sex and the City, and The House Bunny starring Anna Faris as a former Playboy Bunny who suddenly finds herself homeless.
“Much of my life has been like an adolescent dream of an adult life,” Hefner told The Times in 1992. “If you were still a boy, in almost a Peter Pan kind of way, and could have just the perfect life that you wanted to have, that's the life I invented for myself.”
In an another interview explaining the popularity of the magazine he said: “Even before I started writing the philosophy, there was a point of view in the magazine...Prior to that you couldn't run nude pictures without some kind of rationale that they were art.
"I made them into, I put them into a context of a positive, or what I perceived as a positive attitude, on male-female relationships. I suggested that sex was not the enemy, that violence was the enemy, that nice girls like sex.”
Joanna Krupa, who posed for Playboy in 2005 and 2009, told Fox News when the 2009 issue came out: “There are several great reasons why female celebs line up to shoot Playboy: finally a woman gets paid more than a man for comparable work, she gets to set the rules, gets to be in a real team work with other women, as many key positions at Playboy are in fact held by women!
"She brings in her creative ideas, gets involved in the photo selection and ends up with something she co-created through and through.”
Playboy Enterprises expanded over the years to include television, film, resorts, nightclubs, products, charities and a number of websites. By 1971 it was selling 7 million copies a month.
Asked in 2013 how many women he had been with over the years, Hefner told Esquire: “How could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I'm sure. There were chunks of my life when I was married, and when I was married I never cheated. But I made up for it when I wasn't married. You have to keep your hand in.”
In 2011 he told The Hollywood Reporter: “Could I be in a better place and happier than I am today? I don't think so. In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined a sweeter life.”
Hefner is survived by his wife Crystal Harris and his four children from previous relationships.

Neymar Leads PSG Past Bayern, Michy Batshuayi Stuns Atletico Madrid

Neymar starred as Paris Saint-Germain sent out a statement of intent with an impressive 3-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, while Michy Batshuayi grabbed an injury-time winner as Chelsea won 2-1 at Atletico Madrid. It took PSG less than two minutes to break the deadlock in the Group B clash against Bayern, as world-record signing Neymar teed up fellow Brazilian Dani Alves to hammer home. Bayern piled on the pressure but failed to take their chances, before Edinson Cavani finished a sweeping counter-attack with an exquisite strike into the top corner.
Unai Emery's men finished off their visitors in the 63rd minute when Neymar pounced after Kylian Mbappe had bamboozled the Bayern defence.
"The main thing is the three points, but it's also important for me that the fans enjoy the match and seeing us win against a top-level side," said Spanish coach Emery.
PSG now lead the five-time champions by three points in the race to finish top of Group B.
Atletico were handed the opener against English champions Chelsea when David Luiz needlessly gave away a penalty and Antoine Griezmann slotted past keeper Thibaut Courtois.
But the Wanda Metropolitano -- as well as the watching Diego Costa, signed this week from Chelsea -- was silenced as former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata headed in an excellent Eden Hazard cross.
Antonio Conte's men deserved all three points and snatched the win in the fourth minute of added time as Belgian subsitute Batshuayi picked out the bottom corner.
"Michy scores every time he's on the field! He can score every time. I'm so happy for him," said winger Hazard.
"We want to play games like these. We play for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world and we want to win everything."
Chelsea are now clear of Roma at the top of Group C by two points, after the Italians held on to beat Qarabag 2-1 in the early kick-off in Baku.
Kostas Manolas and Edin Dzeko put the visitors two goals to the good inside quarter of an hour, and although Pedro Henrique pulled one back for Qarabag, the home side couldn't find a maiden Champions League point.
United outclass CSKA
Three-time winners Manchester United brushed aside CSKA Moscow 4-1 to maintain their unbeaten record in the Russian capital, with Romelu Lukaku continuing his extraordinary start to life at the club with a brace.
The Belgian striker headed Jose Mourinho's visitors in front, before Anthony Martial made it two from the penalty spot.
Lukaku tapped in his 10th goal of the season before half-time and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the fourth before a late consolation from teenager Konstantin Kuchaev.
"It is a great achievement (Lukaku's goals), but it's only possible with a good team," said Mourinho.
"But for Romelu, these are incredible numbers. He is humble, he wants to learn, he is ambitious."
The other game in Group A saw Basel make it back-to-back defeats for 10-man Benfica, with a stunning 5-0 thrashing in Switzerland.
Michael Lang slotted into an empty net and Dimitri Oberlin finished off a breakaway to get Basel off to a brilliant start.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel's penalty ended the game as a contest and Andre Almeida was sent off for a horrendous tackle, with the 19-year-old Oberlin completing a brace.
Basel's biggest ever win in the Champions League was sealed by teenager Blas Riveros.
Last season's runners-up Juventus struggled for long periods at home to Olympiakos, but eventually saw off their stubborn visitors 2-0 as Gonzalo Higuain came off the bench to score.
A brave effort from Olympiakos was in vain as Mario Mandzukic bundled in a second.
Barcelona overcame a stuttering display to edge out Sporting 1-0 in the Portuguese capital.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both wasted excellent chances in the opening 45 minutes, but Ernesto Valverde's side were fortunate to score a 49th-minute winner through Sebastian Coates' own goal.
Barca lead Juve and Sporting by three points at the top of Group D.
Celtic cruised past Anderlecht 3-0 in what looks to be a fight for third place behind PSG and Bayern in Group B.
Leigh Griffiths grabbed the first goal shortly before half-time in Brussels and the Glaswegians wrapped it up in the second period as Serigne Kara put through his own net and Scott Sinclair rifled home.

Harry Kane scores sixth hat-trick of 2017 in Spurs' 3-0 win at Apoel

Harry Kane scored his sixth hat trick of 2017 in Tottenham's 3-0 win over Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ time), taking the in-form striker's tally to five goals after two Group H games.
After going through his usual dry spell in August, the English Premier League's top scorer for the past two seasons is back to his prolific best. It's now nine goals in his last five games in all competitions for the England striker.
Kane followed up his double in Spurs' 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund by grabbing the opening goal in Cyprus when he finished from the edge of the area in the 39th minute from Toby Alderweireld's defence-splitting pass.
An unmarked Kane got his second in the 62nd when he received a pass from Moussa Sissoko and fired again past goalkeeper Boy Waterman. He rounded off his hat-trick five minutes later with a header from inside the box after meeting a cross from Kieran Trippier.
His haul featured goals with his right foot, left foot and head - sometimes referred to as the "perfect hat-trick.''
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said after Kane's double in the 3-2 win over West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday that he was "in love'' with the striker.
Asked if he'd swap Kane for current world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo, Pochettino said: "Kane is one of the best, Ronaldo is one of the best.''
The 24-year-old Kane tied a Champions League record of scoring five goals in the first two games of a group campaign, after Ronaldo and Filippo Inzaghi. He has seven goals in five games in Europe's top competition.
It was Tottenham's biggest away win in the Champions League.
For Apoel, it is two straight 3-0 losses to open the group, after defeat at Real Madrid two weeks ago.
A two-goal performance by Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real Madrid a 3-1 win at Borussia Dortmund, keeping the defending champions at the top of Group H along with Tottenham.
Liverpool was held to a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow to remain winless after two matches, while Manchester City made it two wins in a row with a 2-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in England.
Missed chances were costly for Liverpool as it dropped points again in Russia, where the hosts opened the scoring with a free kick by Fernando before Philippe Coutinho equalised a few minutes later.
Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scored either side of Sergio Aguero's penalty miss as Manchester City beat Shakhtar Donetsk to take the group's lead with six points, three more than Shakhtar and Napoli.
By seeing his penalty saved by goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov, Aguero missed a chance to join Eric Brook as City's all-time record scorer on 177 goals.
FC Porto picked up a stunning 3-0 victory at Monaco, while Sevilla easily defeated Maribor of Slovenia 3-0 in Spain.

Australia Matildas star Sam Kerr a shock omission from FIFA world player of the year shortlist

Matildas star striker Sam Kerr is the talk of the football world, but according to FIFA she is not in the final three for the Women's Player of the Year award.
Matildas striker Sam Kerr may be in unstoppable form on the pitch, but the Australian star has been a shock omission from the shortlist for the Best FIFA Women's Player award of 2017.
The 24-year-old from Western Australia, whose outrageous backflip celebrations have become as well known as her stunning goals, was one of 10 players in contention for the award.
When FIFA cut the list to three finalists on Friday night, Kerr's name was not to be found.
The trio left in the hunt for the prestigious award were US midfielder Carli Lloyd — FIFA's player of the year in 2015 and 2016 — Dutch attacking player Lieke Martens and young Venezuelan striker Deyna Castellanos.
The award is decided by votes from a combination of categories from national coaches, captains, members of the media and fans.
The decision to leave out Kerr has prompted outrage on social media, as her Australian teammates and peers from around the world expressed amazement and frustration that she was not on the list.
Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams — who has seen Kerr's performances up close this year — was one who posted her response to the shortlist.
The reaction of retired American midfield great Julie Foudy — a two-time Women's World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medallist — summed up the feelings of many.
American Abby Wambach, like Foudy a two-time World Cup winner and Olympic gold medallist, the Best Player for 2012, and world record-holder for the number of international goals with 184, also sent her support to the Australian.
The award takes in the dates from November 20, 2016 to August 7, 2017 — the period does not include the Matildas' series win over Brazil in Australia earlier this month, where Kerr scored three of her team's five goals over two matches.
Kerr has earned rave reviews from pundits and fans alike for her performances in a breakthrough year for the Matildas.
Two months ago, the Australian team won the Tournament of Champions in the US, defeating the host nation for the first time ever, and thrashing Japan and Brazil to finish on top of the four-team event.
Kerr scored four times over Australia's three games, including a first-half hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Japan, along with a goal in the Matildas' 6-1 victory over Brazil.
This year she also won the W-League's Julie Dolan Medal as the competition's best player for the 2016/17 season for her performances at Perth Glory.
In addition, Kerr became the all-time leading goalscorer in America's National Women's Soccer League, where she plays for Sky Blue FC in New Jersey.
The announcement of who wins the Best FIFA Women's Player award for 2017 will be made at a ceremony in London on October 23.

Forget Sex Box, Sex Tape is the new ‘provocative reality series’ coming to shock you

TV has given us couples having sex in a box so why not couples making sex tapes?

Well, no fear as eOne have partnered with Israel-based Armoza Formats to co-produce a new programme called Sex Tape which has been billed as ‘a provocative new hour-long social experiment reality series’.
Sex Tape will feature the same format as Sex Box, in which the couples had sex in a box and then discussed the sex and their relationship with an expert; in Sex Tape the couples will produce their own sex tapes for a week, before later meeting with an expert – and the other couples – to watch the footage and debate relationship issues

The two companies are working together for a US programme but it is thought that Armoza is also developing the format for the UK along with the rest of Europe.

Hosted by Steve Jones and sexologist Goedele Liekens, Sex Box shocked viewers with its graphic explanations and its return in April 2016 saw an audience member advise a new lesbian couple that the way forward is ‘one in the poop and two in the gloop’ while a man literally crouched down and licked an iPad in Steve Jones’ lap which had an app which helped him with his oral technique.

Own goals earn PSG 2-0 home win against Lyon

Paris St Germain needed two own goals by Marcelo and Jeremy Morel to beat Olympique Lyonnais 2-0 at home and stretch their Ligue 1 lead to three points on Sunday.
Defenders Marcelo and Morel turned strikes by Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe into their own net in the 75th and 86th minutes respectively, as PSG maintained their perfect record after six league games.
PSG lead champions Monaco, who beat Strasbourg 3-0 on Saturday, by three points. Lyon slipped down to fifth on 11 points.
“It was a complicated game against a good team but we showed we could do great things together,” said Mbappe, who joined from Monaco this season.
“I enjoy it a lot here, I learn a lot, I still have to improve.”
The game marked the first time that none of the members of the ‘MNC’ (Mbappe, Neymar, Cavani) found the back of the net as Lyon proved a tough nut to crack.
Holding midfielder Tanguy Ndombele was a wall the PSG midfielders and forwards struggled to pierce and the capital side broke the deadlock shortly after the 20-year-old was substituted.
Giovani Lo Celso, who had just replaced the disappointing Julian Draxler, beat Kenny Tete on the left flank and found Cavani with a low cross.
The Uruguayan’s back heel was deflected into his own net by Marcelo as PSG took a deserved lead.
Five minutes later, PSG were awarded a penalty after Ferland Mendy brought down Mbappe. As Cavani was about to take the spot kick, Neymar came to him and appeared to ask to take it. Cavani refused and his powerful shot was deflected on to the bar by keeper Anthony Lopes.
PSG rounded it off four minutes from time when Mbappe collected a nice, defence-splitting pass from Neymar and Lopes’s save bounced off Morel and into the net.

Rampant Manchester City go top, Palace slump continues

Manchester City thumped Watford 6-0 to move top of the Premier League on Saturday as Crystal Palace suffered their fifth successive loss in a 1-0 defeat by Southampton.
With joint leaders Manchester United playing on Sunday, along with Chelsea, City took their opportunity to lay down a title marker with another attacking masterclass and go three points clear of their neighbours at the summit.
Sergio Aguero scored his 10th City hat-trick, with strike partner Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling also netting against previously unbeaten Watford as City, who beat Liverpool 5-0 and Feyenoord 4-0 this week, romped home.
Aguero has now scored 175 goals for City and is closing in on the club’s all-time record of 177, set by Eric Brook between 1928 and 1940.
“I was lucky to manage Barcelona with many outstanding performances but this week has been a lot of goals,” said manager Pep Guardiola.
“We have found our game, we can make short passes and we have a lot of energy from our fullbacks,” added the Spaniard whose side had 28 shots on goal and inflicted Watford’s heaviest top-flight league defeat.
Former England manager Roy Hodgson would have loved to call on some of that firepower at Selhurst Park as he began his latest job at Crystal Palace, who look serious candidates for relegation after suffering the worst start to a season by any side in English football’s top-flight history.
Steven Davis scored the only goal of the game after six minutes and Southampton, for whom Virgil van Dijk came on as a substitute to play his first game in eight months, survived the odd second-half scare to take all three points.
“We didn’t deserve a fairytale ending,” Hodgson said. “We didn’t play well enough. After the goal you could see the nerves and the anxiety.”
It was hardly much better for Liverpool who completed a disappointing week by drawing 1-1 with Burnley at Anfield. The visitors remained unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season after a win at Chelsea and a draw at Tottenham Hotspur.
Even Philippe Coutinho’s first start could not secure the points for Liverpool, who trailed to a Scott Arfield goal before Mohamed Salah equalised with his fifth of the season.
Newcastle United posted their third successive win, 2-1 over Stoke City, to cheer Rafa Benitez on his return to the dugout after ill health. For the second week running, Jamaal Lascelles scored the winner to justify the expected award of a new five-year contract at the club.
Newcastle are fourth, two places and one point above fellow promoted side Huddersfield Town, who drew 1-1 with Leicester City.
Jamie Vardy’s second-half penalty earned the visitors a point after Laurent Depoitre had given Huddersfield the lead.
West Ham United drew 0-0 with West Bromwich Albion in a game memorable only for Gareth Barry’s record-equalling 632nd Premier League appearance for the home side at The Hawthorns.
In Saturday’s late kickoff, suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur had cracked their home curse after their midweek Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund proved shortlived.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were held 0-0 by Swansea City, the third successive time Wembley’s new tenants have failed to win at home in the league this season.

Real Madrid ease past Sociedad to overcome league blip

Real Madrid put their title defence back on track with a comfortable 3-1 win over Real Sociedad at Anoeta on Sunday, despite missing several key players.
Sociedad defender Kevin Rodrigues scored at both ends and Borja Mayoral and Gareth Bale netted Madrid’s other goals to help them equal the consecutive scoring record of 73 games set by Pele’s Santos between 1961 and 1963.
Madrid faced a tricky clash against an in-form side with Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo suspended and Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos injured but after disappointing consecutive league draws they made light work of Eusebio Sacristan’s men.
The champions ended Sociedad’s unbeaten start to the season and moved up to fourth place, cutting table-topping Barcelona’s lead on them to four points.
Real Sociedad are third, on nine points, one ahead of Madrid and one behind Sevilla, who beat Girona 1-0 away to move second.
With Madrid weakened, the 20-year-old Mayoral rewarded Zinedine Zidane’s faith in him by breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute.
The striker netted his first goal for the club with a poacher’s finish after Sergio Ramos tried and failed to tee himself up for an overhead kick, having scored a similar goal against Apoel Nicosia on Wednesday.
Mayoral’s strike extended Madrid’s scoring streak, which began in April 2016 at Anoeta with a 1-0 win over Sociedad.
However their joy was short-lived as 10 minutes later Sociedad levelled when Alvaro Odriozola crossed for Rodrigues, whose shot squirmed past Keylor Navas, who should have kept it out.
Navas was not the only one to suffer, with a cameraman behind the goal being injured during fans’ celebrations in a makeshift stand placed behind the goal, while Anoeta undergoes renovations. He was removed on a stretcher but still able to offer a thumbs up to the fans.
Seven minutes later Rodrigues scored again, this time putting the ball into his own net after a lightning break from the visitors.
The French left-back was in the thick of the action, coming close to beating Navas with a strike against the crossbar, before charging back moments later to cut out Mayoral’s cross, only to divert it past Geronimo Rulli.
Zidane asked for more from Bale ahead of the game after fans criticised his form and the Welshman delivered in the 61st minute, breaking through on to Isco’s pass and crisply dinking the ball over the onrushing Rulli.

Dybala scores second hat-trick of season as Juve bounce back

Juventus forward Paulo Dybala scored three outstanding goals to notch up his second league hat-trick of the season and lead the champions to a 3-1 win at Sassuolo on Sunday, as they bounced back from their midweek mauling by Barcelona.
The Argentine celebrated his 100th game for the Turin side in style with one stunning effort from long range and another from a seemingly impossible position where he was surrounded by four Sassuolo defenders.
Sixteen-year-old Pietro Pellegri, who in May became the first played to be born in 2001 to score in Serie A, scored two goals for Genoa although they lost 3-2 at home to an inspired Lazio.
Dries Mertens also grabbed a hat-trick, including two penalties, as Napoli thrashed hapless Serie A newcomers Benevento 6-0.
Croatia’s Nikola Kalinic scored his first two goals for AC Milan in a 2-1 win over Udinese in which both sides had a goal chalked off after consultations with the video assistant referee (VAR).
Juve, humbled 3-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, maintained their perfect start in Serie A with 12 points from four games, alongside Inter Milan and Napoli, while Lazio have 10.
Dybala has scored in each of those games and has already taken his tally to eight.
The Argentine put Juventus ahead in the 16th minute when he took Mario Mandzukic’s pass in his stride and swept an outswinging shot into the far corner from 25 metres.
Not content with that, he conjured up a goal from nowhere four minutes into the second half.
Collecting Juan Cuadrado’s pass inside the area, Dybala found himself surrounded by defenders but caught his opponents off guard with a snap shot out of the blue.
Matteo Politano pulled one back for Sassuolo but Dybala completed his hat-trick by curling in a free kick just after the hour mark, taking his Juventus tally to 52 goals in 100 appearances in all competitions.
“Paulo is continuing to improve, although he needs to do better when we’re in the lead,” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri. “But he’s an extraordinary player.”
Sassuolo are one of five teams still to win.
Pellegri twice equalised for Genoa against Lazio but it was not enough as Ciro Immobile scored an 82nd-minute winner for the visitors, his second goal of the game and sixth of the season.
Napoli took their league tally to 15 goals in four games with their demolition of Benevento, who are bottom after losing all their matches so far
Allan, Lorenzo Insigne, Mertens, with an acrobatic effort, and Jose Callejon were all on target in the first half, before the Belgian converted two second-half penalties.
Fifth-placed Milan, thumped 4-1 by Lazio last week, squeezed past Udinese although they had a let-off in the 10th minute when Kevin Lasagna broke clear and scored for the visitors, only to see his goal ruled out by the VAR for offside.
The goals all came in a nine-minute first-half spell with Kalinic, signed from Fiorentina in the summer, scoring twice for Milan and Lasagna replying in between after pouncing on an awful pass by Alessio Romagnoli.
Kalinic had the ball in the net again in the second half but it was also ruled out, again for offside, after the referee consulted the VAR.

Jermain Defoe rolls back the years to get Bournemouth rolling

Bournemouth’s season is finally up and running, the sense of relief evident in the fist pump from Eddie Howe that greeted the sight of Jermain Defoe rolling back the years with his first goal for the club since 2001. Defoe and Bournemouth have come a long way since those days and it was the predatory touch in front of goal that the striker showed here that prompted Howe to bring him back for a second time.
That strike gave Bournemouth their first Premier League win of the season on a night when the introduction of Jordon Ibe changed the complexion of a game that Brighton had within their grasp for a brief period. Solly March’s header early in the second half threatened to condemn Bournemouth to a fifth straight league defeat until two goals in the space of six minutes.
Ibe was involved in both, setting up Andrew Surman’s first Premier League goal for the club with some dexterous footwork before releasing Defoe with another moment of class. Signed on a free transfer from Sunderland in the summer, Defoe thrashed a low shot beyond Mathew Ryan and Howe could finally rejoice.
This was the first top-flight meeting between these clubs and the onus was always going to be on Bournemouth, who were at home and desperate to get some points on the board, to make the running. Dominating possession, they did exactly that against a Brighton side content to sit deep and defend in numbers, yet finding a way through that bank of yellow shirts to create decent goalscoring opportunities proved difficult.
For long periods in the first half Bournemouth’s build-up play was neat and tidy, but there was no gear change to prise open Brighton. So much of their passing was in front of Brighton, going sideways rather than forwards as murmurs of discontent started to be heard in the stands, and on the rare occasions that Howe’s team did get in behind the visitors’ defence, the final cross or pass was poor.
Bournemouth, in short, were playing into Brighton’s hands and by half-time Chris Hughton was entitled to think that his game-plan had worked perfectly. Bournemouth looked like they were running out of ideas as to how to break Brighton down and the announcer was chancing his arm when he asked the home supporters to show their appreciation for the team at half-time. “The goal’s that way,” one wag had shouted a few moments earlier.
Low on confidence, Bournemouth badly needed a goal to infuse them with a little belief and to draw Brighton out from their defensive lines. The closest they came in the opening 45 minutes was when Defoe allowed Marc Pugh’s pass to run, turned sharply on the edge of the area and swept a right-footed shot that flashed beyond the far upright.
The move started down Bournemouth’s left, where Charlie Daniels was seeing plenty of the ball and getting into some promising positions but not quite delivering when it mattered.
Pugh, one of three changes to the Bournemouth side that lost at Arsenal, thrashed an earlier chance wide from about 12 yards and Joshua King should have done better when Shane Duffy’s careless and wayward square pass presented him with the ball 25 yards from goal. King seemed to be caught in two minds and ended up trying to place a shot that Lewis Dunk blocked in a moment that rather summed up Bournemouth’s lack of conviction.
Playing on the counter-attack, Brighton threatened only sporadically. Anthony Knockaert, who showed some nice touches, cut in from the right and unleashed a 25-yard shot that slipped a few feet wide of Asmir Begovic’s near post. Brighton’s only other foray forward of note in the first half came about when Davy Pröpper intercepted Harry Arter’s pass, rode a couple of tackles and dinked the ball onto the roof of the net.
Brighton, however, were much more menacing at the start of the second half. Surman twice headed off the line to deny first Duffy and then Pröpper.
There was another reprieve for Bournemouth when Dale Stephens nodded against the underside of the bar, but the home team’s good fortune was about to run out. Pascal Gross turned Daniels one way and then the other before digging out a superb cross that March nodded powerfully into the net.
Bournemouth badly needed a response and Surman provided one, showing impressive composure to finish off some excellent approach play that culminated in a lovely backheel from Ibe setting him free inside the area.
Surman did the rest with a flourish, sitting Duffy on his backside with a clever dummy before placing his shot in the corner. Bournemouth suddenly looked like a different team and in the blink of an eye they had a second.
Once again Ibe was the architect, finding Defoe with a beautifully weighted deft pass that the striker dispatched with glee.

Europa League: AC Milan, AEK Athens and Real Sociedad start with big wins

Andre Silva scored a hat-trick as AC Milan cruised to an emphatic 5-1 win away to Austria Vienna in Europa League Group D on Thursday.
The Portugal star scored his first goal in the 10th minute shortly after Hakan Calhanoglu had already fired Vincenzo Montella's men in front.
Silva added his second after 20 minutes and despite Alexandar Borkovic briefly reducing the deficit, second-half goals from Silva and Suso eased the Serie A side home.
AEK Athens also got their Group D campaign off to a winning start with a 2-1 success in Rijeka, goals from Petros Mantalos and Lazaros Christodoulopoulos sandwiching a Josip Elez strike.
There was a shock for Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in Group C as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Sporting Braga, Joao Carlos and Dyego Sousa scoring in the visitors' come-from-behind win after Sandro Wagner gave the hosts an early lead.
In the other game in Group C, Ludogorets held Istanbul Basaksehir to a goalless draw in the Turkish capital.
Everton were beaten 3-0 by Atalanta in Group E, while Adrian Sardinero grabbed an equaliser deep into injury-time as Apollon grabbed a 1-1 draw at home to Lyon, who led through a Memphis Depay penalty.
Meanwhile, Villarreal were forced to work to overcome Kazakhstan's Astana 3-1 in Group A, two goals in the last 15 minutes from Cedric Bakambu and Denis Cheryshev seeing them home.
Nicola Sansone had put the La Liga side in front in the 16th minute only for Yuri Logvinenko to threaten an upset when he equalised in the 68th minute.
Vardar were no match for Zenit in Skopje, the Russians running out 5-0 winners in their Group L clash with two goals from Aleksandr Kokorin and one each from Branislav Ivanovic, Artem Dzyuba and Emiliano Rigoni.
Real Sociedad were the other big winners in Group L, beating Rosenborg 4-0 with two from Diego Llorente and a further strike from David Zurutuza and a Jorgen Skjelvik own goal.
Slavia Prague joined Villarreal at the top of Group A after Tomas Necid's 12th-minute strike was enough to see them past Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Czech capital.
In Group B, Sergey Sydorchuk, Junior Moraes and Dieumerci Mbokani saw Dinamo Kiev come from behind to claim a 3-1 win over Skenderbeu, who led through Gjergj Muzaka.
Young Boys and Partizan Belgrade battled out a 1-1 draw in Switzerland, Marko Jankovic's early goal for the visitors quickly cancelled out by Christian Fassnacht.
Lazio came from behind to win 3-2 at Vitesse Arnhem in Group K to complete a perfect night for three Serie A teams. Ciro Immobile scored their second goal, taking his tally for the season to seven in five games in all competitions.
In the group's other game, Nice thumped Zulte-Waregem 5-1 in Belgium with Alassane Plea scoring the first two goals, followed by a third from Dante and one from Allan Saint-Maximin before maverick striker Mario Balotelli wrapped up the win.
Steaua Bucharest made a promising start in Group G with Constantin Budescu scoring twice and Denis Alibec getting the third in a 3-0 home win over Viktoria Plzen, while in the same group Hapoel Be'er Sheva beat Lugano 2-1, Dan Einbinder and a Sher Tzedek penalty enough despite a late Tzedek own goal.
In Belgrade, Red Star Belgrade and BATE Borisov drew 1-1, Nemanja Radonjic opening the scoring for the home side and Nikolay Signevich equalising in their Group H clash.
Adil Rami scored the only goal as Marseille beat Konyaspor 1-0 in Group I, while Vitoria Guimaraes drew 1-1 with Salzburg, Pedrao's opener cancelled out by Valon Berisha on the stroke of half-time.
Athletic Bilbao drew 0-0 at Hertha Berlin in Group J while Oestersunds won 2-0 at Zorya.
Both games in Group F finished goalless, Zlin and Sheriff drawing a blank in Olomouc and Copenhagen and Lokomotiv Moscow doing the same in Denmark.
